Detour Console

Detour Console

Description: This piece was made as part of the latest Love factor exhibition.  The exhibition title was Detour and we all decided to introduce a new material into our work.  As time went by we all settled on locally sourced materials, in my case china clay. Working with David and Alice from the Welcombe pottery, I designed a piece using raku glazed tiles on the top. The crazed appearance of the tiles is created when they are removed from the kiln and put into sawdust. The glaze shrinks faster than the clay and the cracks fill with carbon from the burning sawdust. The dark cracked edges led me to blacken the oak using a mixture of wire wool and vinegar and use a black grout so the colour looks like it is spreading into all the elements of the piece.
