Tidy workshop

I have spent the last few days sorting out the workshop. With the help of some new shelving and storage I have finally found homes for the numerous little odds and sods which ‘may come in useful’ some day. Many of the sods were deemed to be of absolutely no use what-so-ever and have been filed in the bin. Here are a couple of pics of the workshop. They are in black and white as the shelving is alarmingly orange and I haven’t quite come to terms with it.

Lectern for St Aubyns

Yesterday I delivered the final piece of furniture for St Aubyns church. The Alter, lectern and Chair (made by Sean Stowell) are the final pieces of the project. Here are some pics.

RAMM Seating

Description : A range of seating designed for the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter. The museum has recently undergone a major renovation, including the addition of a modern wing. The challenge was to design seating which worked in both the new galleries and the original Victorian spaces. There is a lot of exposed structural detail in the original parts and I really liked the way that the decorative details and the more industrial elements interacted. I echoed this in the design, using a decorative moulding and big bolts to attach the planks onto the metal frames. The curved shapes on the brackets were inspired by the shapes on a huge, original stone fireplace in the museum.

Materials : Powder coated steel bases with solid oak tops.

Alice chair with Josef Frank fabric

Today I am delivering an Alice chair to Exeter. The chair has been bought as a 40th birthday present for my client’s sister. The material she chose is by the architect and designer Josef Frank of Svenskt Tenn. I love the way the fabric changes the feel of the chair and that its design is able to take such a bold patterns.

St Aubyns Church

I met Amanda Le Page of Le Page Architects during the summer whilst exhibiting at Bovey Tracey Contemporary Craft Fair. We got chatting and she told me about a project that they had been working on in Plymouth to restore a church and at the same time use the building as a public library. The main work was completed and they needed someone to make the alter, lectern and a chair to complete the project and asked if I would be interested. I normally only make my own designs but the project sounded interesting and I agreed to have a look at the job.

The pieces were designed by Charlotte Burden who works for Le Page and were designed as part of the overall scheme. Here are a few pics of the alter. I will put more photo s on when I have delivered the lectern.

The Devon Guild of Craftsmen

Earlier this year I became a member of The Devon Guild of Craftsmen. On Monday Alice and I went down for a spot of lunch in at the guild and to hang a set of ‘Clarity shelves’ in the shop as part of their Christmas exhibition. The shelves are also available directly fom me (furniture@christianoreilly.com), they are made in oak and toughened glass and retail for £325 including p&p to mainland UK.

Fluted oak desk

Description : This desk has a contemporary feel but with strong links to the more traditional. I have used light to create visual interest, with the fluting on the front and sides creating parallel lines of light and shade. The inside edge of the long slender legs are also fluted in keeping with the detailing on the rest of sideboard.

Nash Cabinet

Description: A three drawer cabinet on a stand. My client needed a set of drawers for her bedroom which could accommodate a small laundry basket underneath. The drawers are generously deep and lined with the aromatic wood, cedar of Lebanon. This not only acts a deterrent for moths but has a wonderful perfume. I custom designed the aluminium handles for the piece and had them cast locally by a traditional foundry.

Materials: Ash, oak , cedar and aluminium.

Finish: Tinted hard wax oil.
